The Mishawaka Police Department has identified the victim of Saturday’s tragic shooting as 10-year-old Sophia Burks. Officers responded to the 300 block of Taylor Street following reports of a child shot. Upon arrival, Sophia was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities have arrested 17-year-old Jacob Olvera in connection with the incident. Olvera, who does not live at the home where the shooting occurred but is the boyfriend of the victim’s older sister, has been charged with possession of a machine gun, dangerous possession of a firearm, and criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony. He has been moved to the Juvenile Justice Center of Saint Joseph County. Police have stated that the case will be handled through juvenile courts but could be transferred to adult court if deemed appropriate.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Ballistics and autopsy results are pending. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Major Crimes Unit of the Mishawaka Police Department at 574-258-1678.
