SAN DIEGO — The city of San Diego is mourning the deaths of Evelyn Virgen, 28, and Ruben Chavez, 31, who were fatally shot early Monday morning on the 100th block of 27th Street in the Grant Hill neighborhood.
San Diego Police responded around 12:30 a.m. to an anonymous tip and found both victims deceased at the scene. Nearby, officers discovered three children unharmed in a parked car, later confirmed to be Evelyn Virgen’s children. The children were placed into protective custody.
Authorities reported that Virgen and Chavez had been dating and were involved in a dispute with Chavez’s ex-girlfriend, Princess Perez, and her current boyfriend, Ramses “Rex” Morales. Perez and Morales were present in the area during the shooting but left before police arrived.
Approximately ten hours later, Perez and Morales were detained by Border Patrol agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry while attempting to cross into Mexico. After interviews with homicide detectives, both were arrested and charged with two counts of murder.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
