KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City community is grieving the tragic loss of 41-year-old Chris Wells, who was fatally shot Monday morning by his neighbor, 42-year-old Jeffrey King, on NE 78th Street.
According to authorities, police responded to the scene at 7:37 a.m. after Wells’ wife called 911 to report that her husband had been shot. Officers found Wells lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators reported that Wells suffered 13 gunshot wounds, five to the front of his body and eight to the back. Eight 9mm bullet casings were recovered near his body. Two children reportedly witnessed part of the shooting.
Authorities said Wells’ wife had encountered King earlier that morning while walking their dog. A no-contact order was in place, and she said King had thrown an object onto her property, prompting her to call her husband for help. Court documents indicate that Wells later confronted King on his property, leading to a physical altercation before King fired multiple shots.
King was arrested and is facing first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges. He is being held in the Clay County Detention Center on a $5 million bond.
Family, friends, and neighbors are remembering Chris Wells as a devoted husband and a valued member of his community. His sudden and violent death has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew him. The community continues to keep his loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time.
