COLUMBIA, S.C. — The city of Columbia and the University of South Carolina community are mourning the tragic death of Eliana M. “Ellie” Peterson, 18, of Columbia, whose body was discovered Tuesday at the 650 Lincoln student housing complex in the 600 block of Lincoln Street.
Ellie was a first-year chemistry student from Sumter, South Carolina, pursuing her studies at USC. According to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under active investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) at the request of the USC Police Department.
University officials have stated that there is no threat to campus, and USC’s Student Affairs team is offering support and counseling to students, faculty, and staff affected by this tragedy.
Family, friends, classmates, and members of the Columbia community are deeply grieving the loss of a young life full of promise. Ellie Peterson is remembered for her intelligence, her dedication to her studies, and the positive impact she had on those around her. Her death has sent shockwaves across the USC campus and the wider Columbia area, leaving an irreplaceable void in the lives of all who knew her.
As authorities continue their investigation, the community comes together to honor Ellie’s memory, share condolences, and support her loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time.
Eliana “Ellie” Peterson’s life, though tragically cut short, will be remembered by all who knew her. May she rest in peace, and may comfort and strength surround her family, friends, and the Columbia community.
If you want, I can also create an “In Loving Memory” tribute version that’s more emotional and personal for the USC and Columbia community. Do you want me to do that next?
