FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The Fairbanks community is mourning the tragic and shocking loss of Velma Koontz, 87, who was found deceased Tuesday afternoon in her home at 1018 22nd Avenue.
According to the Fairbanks Police Department, Koontz suffered a gunshot wound to the back of her head. Her husband reported that he had left for the store and, upon returning, discovered his wife deceased in her wheelchair, with his gun lying outside the residence.

Investigators said Koontz’s grandson, Brian Davenport (DOB 11/06/96), admitted to taking his grandfather’s handgun and killing his grandmother.
