In Loving Memory of Herbert N. Townsend Jr.

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. — The community is mourning the tragic loss of Herbert N. Townsend Jr., 54, who was killed in a car crash on State Route 17 West on the morning of January 17.

According to the Johnson City Police Department, the fatal incident occurred around 6:19 a.m. between exits 70 and 71. Townsend Jr., who was last known to reside in Endwell, was on foot in the middle of the highway when he was struck by a 43-year-old driver. At the time, it was dark, and Townsend Jr. was wearing dark clothing, which may have contributed to the collision.

Police have stated that it remains unclear why Townsend Jr. was on the highway, and the driver involved is not suspected of any wrongdoing. Despite the driver’s cooperation, Townsend Jr. succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Family, friends, and the community are left grieving the sudden and tragic loss of Herbert N. Townsend Jr., a life taken far too soon. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident while the community remembers him and mourns his passing.
