JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The Johnson City community is mourning the tragic loss of 57-year-old Danny D. Davis, who was struck and killed in a fatal hit-and-run on Sunday night, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Authorities said Davis was the pedestrian found deceased in the roadway at the intersection of West Market Street and South Center Street. A Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputy discovered the victim, who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Emergency communications had not received any calls regarding the incident, and no witnesses were initially identified.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol took over the investigation with assistance from the Johnson City Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. JCPD officers reviewed nearby traffic camera footage, which captured the crash and provided a description of the suspect vehicle. That information was entered into the department’s Flock Safety license plate reader system.
Around 9 p.m., investigators identified and arrested the driver, 32-year-old Kayla Maria McCown, who was operating a Subaru Ascent at the time of the crash. THP reported that McCown has been charged with accidents involving death or personal injury (leaving the scene), duty to give information and render aid, and immediate notice of accident.
Danny D. Davis’s death has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. As the investigation continues, the Johnson City community comes together in grief, offering condolences and support to Davis’s family during this unimaginably difficult time.
