WICHITA, Kan. — The Wichita community is mourning the tragic loss of 28-year-old Jon Berkenmeier, who was fatally stabbed Monday night in the Delano District.
According to the Wichita Police Department, the incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. inside an apartment complex in the 400 block of West Maple, near McLean. Officers found Berkenmeier suffering from apparent stab wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police said the suspect, a 25-year-old known to the victim, has been taken into custody and faces charges of second-degree murder. Authorities noted that early booking records did not list the suspect’s information.
The Wichita Police Department’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) unit was the first to arrive at the scene, providing real-time aerial video and critical situational information to officers, which enhanced officer awareness and coordination during the initial moments of the response.
Jon Berkenmeier’s untimely death has left family, friends, and the Wichita community grieving a life cut far too short. Loved ones remember him as someone whose presence and impact will not be forgotten.
