SAGINAW, Mich. — The community is mourning the loss of Jose Barrera, a 41-year-old Saginaw resident who died following a shooting early Tuesday morning.
According to Saginaw Police, officers were dispatched to the area of 12th Street and Janes Street around 5:50 a.m. after Central Dispatch received a 911 call in which the line remained open. During the call, information was heard indicating that a person was not breathing, Detective Sergeant Oscar Lopez said in a press release.
When officers arrived, Barrera was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Michigan State Police’s Saginaw Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, with crime lab investigators processing the scene. Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues. Police confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody, though no further details have been released.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Barrera’s family and loved ones during this difficult time, and we remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation,” Detective Sergeant Lopez said.
