CANTON, Ohio — The Canton community is mourning the tragic loss of TaShaun Marques Smith, a 20-year-old Massillon resident who was fatally shot on the evening of January 28, 2026.
According to Canton Police, multiple 911 calls reported a shooting around 5:25 p.m. in the 600 block of Alan Page Drive SE. When officers arrived, they found TaShaun suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported by Canton Fire paramedics to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, where he later died.

In connection with the shooting, four people were arrested:
- Niko M. Marshall, 18, of Canton — charged with murder, felonious assault, having weapons under disability, and a probation violation
- Nathaniel M. Sanford, 33, of Sherrodsville — charged with murder and tampering with evidence
- De Iveon J. Newman, 19, of Massillon — charged with receiving stolen property
- Kymani S. James, 20, of Massillon — charged with tampering with evidence
TaShaun’s loss leaves a profound void for his family, friends, and community. Those who knew him remember a young life full of potential, abruptly cut short by violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
