The Alamogordo community is mourning the tragic passing of Anthony Zane Blalock, 41, whose life came to an end late Tuesday night following an officer-involved shooting. His passing has left family, friends, and loved ones grieving a loss that came suddenly and under deeply distressing circumstances.
According to the New Mexico State Police, the incident occurred on January 13, 2026, at approximately 11:42 p.m., at a residence located at 101 Virginia Avenue, across from a dispensary on East 1st Street. Alamogordo Police officers were responding to a 911 call reporting a possible burglary at the location.
While officers were checking the area, a man at the residence reported that someone was in his backyard and was armed with a knife. As an officer approached the home, Anthony Zane Blalock emerged from behind an enclosed porch and began walking toward the officer. A second officer arrived on scene moments later.
When officers asked who had the knife, Blalock reportedly stated that he did and produced the weapon. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife, but he did not comply and continued moving toward an officer with the knife in his hand. Both officers then discharged their duty weapons, striking Blalock.
Officers immediately rendered aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Despite lifesaving efforts, Anthony Zane Blalock was pronounced deceased at the scene. Neither officer was injured during the incident.
Further investigation found no evidence of a burglary or the presence of another individual. Investigators also observed lacerations to Blalock’s face and wrist that appeared to be self-inflicted. The investigation remains open and active.
Beyond these details, Anthony is remembered as a person whose life mattered. His passing has left a lasting ache in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. The community continues to hold his family and friends in thoughts and prayers during this painful time.
