In Loving Memory: Tyler High School Community Mourns Loss of 15-Year-Old Derrick Dion Holt

TYLER, Texas — The Tyler High School community is grieving the tragic loss of 15-year-old Derrick Holt, who died Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Loop 323 and Van Highway.

According to the Tyler Police Department, Derrick was crossing Loop 323 on foot just north of Van Highway, in an area without a crosswalk or marked intersection, when he was struck by a northbound vehicle in the inside lane. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Derrick was transported to a hospital, where he later passed away from his injuries.

In a letter to parents, guardians, and staff, Tyler High School administrators said:

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our school community, and our thoughts are with Derrick’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers during this incredibly difficult time. We are respecting the family’s privacy as they grieve. Any information regarding ways the community may support the family will be shared if and when it is appropriate.”

The school has made additional counseling staff available to students and staff on campus to provide support as the community mourns.

Family, friends, and members of the community wishing to help may contribute through a GoFundMe campaign established to support Derrick Holt’s family: https://gofund.me/39d423e50.

Derrick’s life, spirit, and memory will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and the community continues to hold his family in their thoughts and prayers.
