It is with deep sadness that the Spartanburg County community mourns the loss of Matthew Edward Carter, 42, who was tragically killed in a shooting in the Cowpens community early Wednesday morning.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 12:50 a.m. on February 4, 2026, to a reported shooting at 235 Graham Chapel Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered Carter suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing.
Matthew’s passing leaves a profound void for his family, friends, and the community who knew him. He is remembered for the life he lived and the impact he had on those around him. Loved ones are asking for prayers, comfort, and privacy during this difficult time.
