Two Dead in Single-Vehicle Crash North of Hill City, South Dakota

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Authorities have identified two people who tragically died in a single-vehicle crash 10 miles north of Hill City on U.S. 385 Saturday night.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred at approximately 10:12 p.m. on January 10, 2025, near mile marker 92. Preliminary information indicates the driver of a 2003 Toyota 4Runner was traveling southbound when the vehicle went off the road to the right, over-corrected, and rolled several times, ultimately coming to rest in the east ditch.

Both occupants, 22-year-old Echo Orion Calatrello of Sturgis and 22-year-old Nicholas Lord Jackson, Jr., of Deadwood, were ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Authorities have not yet determined which occupant was driving at the time of the crash.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is actively investigating the incident. Officials say all information released at this time is preliminary.

The loss of these two young lives is a tragic reminder of the dangers of the road, and the investigation continues to determine the full circumstances of the crash.
