MESQUITE, Texas — The Mesquite Police Department is investigating a homicide after a man was fatally shot Wednesday night in the 300 block of Rodeo Center Boulevard, authorities said.
Officers responded to the scene at approximately 9:51 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, after multiple 9-1-1 callers reported a person lying in a business parking lot who had been shot. Responding officers located the victim and immediately rendered aid.
The victim was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries. He was identified as Jose Rodriguez Jaquez, a 38-year-old man from Mesquite, police confirmed.
During the investigation, officers obtained a description of a suspect vehicle and were able to locate it shortly after the shooting. Police conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Brian Maldonado, a 35-year-old Mesquite resident. Maldonado was initially arrested for the traffic offense of operating a vehicle without a front license plate.
Following further investigation by Mesquite Police Department detectives, a charge of murder was added against Maldonado.
