PUEBLO, Colo. — The Pueblo County Coroner has officially identified Joshua Charles Herbert, 39, as the man who was shot and killed Saturday evening at the Days Inn on the north side of Pueblo.
According to witnesses, the shooting occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m. following an argument at the entrance of a first-floor hotel room, where a man was reportedly being yelled at to leave. During the disturbance, gunfire erupted, and Herbert was struck.
Emergency responders arrived on scene, and Herbert was later pronounced deceased at 9 p.m., according to a statement posted by the Pueblo County Coroner on Facebook.
The cause and manner of death are pending autopsy results, the coroner said.
Police confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody the night of the shooting. On Monday morning, authorities announced the arrest of James McKenney, 63, who is now facing First Degree Murder charges in connection with Herbert’s death.
Witnesses told Pueblo Independent News that shouting could be heard coming from a downstairs hotel room before the shooting. One witness said he removed his family from the area due to the disturbance and returned later to find a heavy police presence and learned that the situation had escalated into a fatal shooting.
Sources also stated that a security guard was present at the time of the incident and was attempting to intervene in the dispute before shots were fired.
Police initially released a statement Saturday night confirming that a person had died at the scene, though the victim’s identity had not yet been released at that time.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Pueblo Police.
