CORBIN, Ky — The Corbin community is mourning the tragic loss of William Darnell, 30, who passed away early Tuesday morning in a crash on Interstate 75 in Laurel County.
The accident occurred around 3 a.m. on Jan. 13, approximately 5 miles north of London in the southbound lanes. According to investigators, a Nissan Altima driven by Darnell struck the rear trailer of a southbound tractor-trailer in the middle lane. Emergency responders pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Steven Patrick Jones, 54, of Xenia, Ohio, was checked at the hospital and later charged with DUI. He has been taken into custody at the Laurel County Detention Center.
The crash temporarily closed the southbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 46, with a detour set up at exit 49. The lanes have since reopened.
Family, friends, and the Laurel County community are remembering William for the joy and warmth he brought into their lives. His sudden passing is a heartbreaking loss, leaving loved ones and neighbors struggling to process this tragedy.
