Suspect Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot After Pursuit in Wise County

Wise County, Va. — Authorities say a suspect wanted in Ohio died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a pursuit in Wise County early Tuesday morning.

Deputies with the Wise County and City of Norton Sheriff’s Office were alerted by the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio regarding a 47-year-old suspect believed to be traveling along U.S. 23 in Wise County. The suspect, later identified as Kenneth Phillips of Ohio, was wanted in connection with a sexual assault investigation and was considered potentially armed and suicidal.

Officials report that deputies observed Phillips driving a gray 2018 Chevrolet Colorado with Ohio registration, failing to maintain his lane. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, Phillips did not yield, prompting a pursuit. Assisting officers deployed spike strips, bringing the vehicle to a stop near the entrance of Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap.

After the vehicle came to a halt, deputies heard a gunshot. Authorities confirmed that Phillips had suffered a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was recovered inside the vehicle, located between the driver’s seat and the suspect’s leg.

The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the sexual assault case. Wise County authorities say the investigation into the pursuit and incident remains ongoing.
