BREVARD, N.C. — The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal accident at the Transylvania County Landfill on February 10 as 21-year-old Dearrius Weston of Arkansas.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigations indicate that Weston was pinned to the ground by a large piece of equipment while working at the landfill, which is located at 500 Howell Road in Brevard. Emergency personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures after Weston was freed, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a tragic and unfortunate accident,” Transylvania County Sheriff Chuck Owenby said in a news release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Weston’s family and with all those affected by this incident.”
Weston was a contract worker involved in the final stages of a six-acre landfill expansion project. Authorities said the incident remains under investigation.
