One Officer Dead, Another Injured in Beech Grove Shooting

BEECH GROVE, Ind. — A Beech Grove police officer was killed and another wounded in a shooting Monday evening near Indianapolis, prompting an intensive search for the suspect.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Diplomat Court in Beech Grove. Investigators said two officers with the Beech Grove Police Department were shot while responding to the scene.

City officials later confirmed that one of the officers, Officer Brian Elliott, died from his injuries. The second officer was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice expressed his grief in a statement, saying, “My heart goes out to Brian’s wife, Erin, his parents, and all of his family, friends, and loved ones. At this time, I am asking that we lean on one another to get through this.”

On Monday night, Sgt. John Perrine with the Indiana State Police identified the suspect as 47-year-old Kenneth Terrell Johnson. The IMPD provided a limited description, stating the suspect is believed to be an approximately 30-year-old Black man last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes.

Authorities continue to search for the suspect and are urging residents to contact police with any information. The investigation remains ongoing.
