ROCHESTER, Mass. — An 11-year-old girl from Rochester, Massachusetts, has been identified as the victim who passed away following an avalanche at a Utah ski resort.
Madelyn Eitas was visiting family during a vacation when the incident occurred. According to Unified Police, around 12:32 p.m., authorities received a report of an avalanche near Brighton Ski Resort. First responders rushed to the scene, where Madelyn’s family and about 20 others were searching the area. Her brother, Cameron Eitas, reportedly used a mobile application to locate her.
Once found, life-saving measures were administered before Madelyn was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Despite these efforts, she passed away. Her family was also transported for care and support.
Rochester School District Superintendent Michael S. Nelson called the news “devastating” and expressed condolences to students, staff, and the family. “Our focus at this time is on supporting those who are grieving, and we ask that the family’s privacy be respected,” Nelson said.
Police added that their “thoughts are with the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time” and noted that communities in both Utah and Massachusetts are rallying to support the family.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
