Police Investigate Fatal Shooting of Brandon Watt

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Authorities in Springfield are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Thursday night, January 15, 2026.

Springfield police responded at 11:51 p.m. to a report of a shooting near the intersection of Kimbrough Avenue and Elm Street. Upon arrival, officers found Brandon Watt, 22, of Springfield, who had been shot. Watt was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. His family has been notified.

Police identified Dawson Smith, 20, also of Springfield, as the suspect. Smith was arrested at the scene. The case will be reviewed by the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office to determine charges.

Detectives continue to investigate the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).

This is Springfield’s second homicide of 2026. Police remind the community to stay vigilant and to report any information that could assist in the investigation.
