In Loving Memory of Benancio Crowley

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Champaign community is mourning the tragic loss of Benancio Crowley, 52, whose life was cut short in a fatal shooting early Friday morning in nearby Urbana.

According to authorities, officers with the Urbana Police Department responded around 1:48 a.m. to reports of a shooting in the 1200 block of Ellis Drive. When officers arrived, they found Crowley suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were immediately administered at the scene before he was transported to Carle Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Benancio Crowley was pronounced dead at 2:56 a.m., as confirmed by Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer.

The alleged shooter was not present when officers arrived, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Detectives from the Urbana Police Department, along with Illinois State Police Crime Scene investigators, worked throughout the early morning hours to document evidence and search for answers. An autopsy has been scheduled, and the case remains active.
