WATERVILLE, Maine — The Maine State Employees Association (MSEA-SEIU) expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of two Maine Department of Transportation workers on Interstate 95 in Waterville Tuesday.
According to MSEA-SEIU President Mark Brunton, James Brown, 60, a Transportation Worker III and Frank Marston Chapter member, and Dwayne Campbell, 51, a Transportation Crew Leader and Transportation Chapter member, both of Waterville, lost their lives while performing their duties on the highway. Brown had served with Maine DOT for over 12 years, and Campbell for more than 23 years.
A third Maine DOT worker was injured in the same incident, which Brunton described as “horrifying and tragic.” He extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the workers, emphasizing the heartbreak felt by the community.
While details of the incident are still emerging, Brunton urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving through highway work zones. “All workers should have the expectation to get home safely at the end of a workday,” he said.
MSEA-SEIU Local 1989 is committed to advocating for safe working conditions for all members and preventing similar tragedies in the future. The union and its members are keeping the families of James Brown, Dwayne Campbell, and the injured worker “close to our hearts at this incredibly difficult time,” Brunton said.
