GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Authorities confirmed that Da-Quain Johnson, the man shot by police officers Wednesday night in Grand Rapids, died Thursday morning at a local hospital.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near M.L.K. Jr. Street and Eastern Avenue, according to Grand Rapids Deputy Police Chief Joseph Trigg. Officers had been alerted to a man riding a bicycle who was potentially armed. When officers attempted to make contact, Johnson reportedly fled on his bike.
Officers followed him to a parking lot behind a nearby apartment complex. A police canine was deployed, and Deputy Chief Trigg said the dog likely bit Johnson, but he continued resisting and struggling with officers.
One officer fired their weapon after Johnson produced a handgun. He was struck by at least one bullet and transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. It remains unclear whether Johnson fired any shots during the encounter.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, in line with department protocol. The Michigan State Police are handling the investigation into the shooting.
This tragic incident has left the community seeking answers as authorities continue their review of the events that led to Johnson’s death.
