Driver Dies After Vehicle Leaves Road and Enters Retention Pond in Greenville County

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — A Simpsonville woman died Tuesday afternoon after her vehicle left the roadway and entered a retention pond area, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities responded at approximately 3:30 p.m. on February 10, 2026, to a reported single-vehicle crash. Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle traveled through a parking lot, crossed a grassy area, and ultimately came to rest in a dry retention pond.

Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and pronounced the driver deceased. The victim has been identified as Deborah McClain Hice of Simpsonville, South Carolina.

Officials have not released additional details regarding what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. An autopsy has been scheduled for February 11, 2026, to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in coordination with local law enforcement agencies. Authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available.
