Elizabeth Paukstis, Innocence Project Attorney, Fatally Struck in Palestine Pedestrian Crash

Palestine — Authorities have identified the woman killed in a pedestrian crash in Palestine, Texas, on Wednesday as Elizabeth Paukstis, a 52-year-old attorney from Washington D.C.

Paukstis was in East Texas assisting inmates at the TDCJ Tennessee Colony Unit and was part of the Wrongful Conviction Project, dedicated to advocating for individuals impacted by wrongful convictions. Her work touched many lives and she was respected in the legal community for her commitment to justice.

According to Palestine Police, witness statements and evidence indicate that a UPS truck was traveling west on S. Loop 256 when Paukstis attempted to cross the road near the intersection. The truck had a green light and struck her. The UPS driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with authorities. At this time, no charges are being filed.

In a statement, UPS expressed their condolences, saying, “Our thoughts are with the individual’s loved ones during this difficult time. We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate what happened.”
