Elkhart Community Mourns 17-Year-Old Bryan Axel Ramirez-Gomez

ELKHART, Ind. — The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating the tragic death of 17-year-old Bryan Axel Ramirez-Gomez, who was fatally shot during an officer-involved incident early Sunday morning, February 8, 2026.

At approximately 1:36 a.m., an Elkhart Police Department officer observed a suspicious vehicle in the High Dive Park Pavilion parking lot at 500 E. Beardsley Ave after the park had closed and following Indiana’s curfew for minors. The officer made contact with the adult driver and identified several passengers, including juveniles. A second officer arrived to assist.

During the encounter, at approximately 1:49 a.m., both officers discharged their firearms, striking Bryan Ramirez-Gomez. Officers immediately rendered first aid at the scene while summoning the Elkhart City Fire Department medics. Bryan was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Several handguns, including those inside and around the vehicle and the officers’ firearms, were seized for investigation. One officer sustained minor injuries but did not require immediate medical attention. No other injuries were reported, and authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The Homicide Unit continues its investigation, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact them at 574-295-2825.

Bryan’s family, friends, and community are mourning his loss. He will be remembered for his life, spirit, and the impact he had on those who knew him.
