HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas — Hidalgo County officials are investigating a tragic early morning crash that claimed the life of Ascension Lopez, 75, of Mission.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incident occurred around 6:16 a.m. on Benson Palm Road, north of San Lucas Street near Palm View. DPS troopers report that a gold Chevrolet Malibu, traveling southbound, attempted to pass another vehicle. In the process, the driver overcorrected to avoid an oncoming northbound vehicle, lost control, and the car veered off the roadway, ultimately rolling into a bar ditch.
Ascension Lopez, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was transported to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities confirm that the investigation is ongoing as DPS works to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
