TOBYHANNA TWP., Pa. — The Monroe County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal crash Friday morning on Interstate 380 in Tobyhanna Township as 30-year-old Osman Augustin Perez of New Jersey.
Perez was pronounced dead at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Pocono Emergency Department at 8:28 a.m., according to officials. The cause and manner of death remain pending. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
In a news release, Pennsylvania State Police said troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on I-380 northbound at mile marker 1.1.
Investigators determined that a work van was traveling too fast for conditions while the roadway was covered in slush. The van entered the left shoulder, struck a guardrail and rolled over multiple times. During the crash, one passenger was ejected from the vehicle.
Police said the ejected passenger came to rest on the right shoulder of the highway. The work van ultimately came to rest in the right lane facing southeast and sustained disabling damage.
Perez, identified as the ejected passenger, was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Two other passengers were also taken to a hospital by EMS and are reported to be in stable condition with minor injuries.
Crash reconstruction specialists responded to process the scene. The work van was towed to the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Stroudsburg as part of the ongoing investigation.
The crash remains under investigation.
