Five Shot in Hammond Apartment Complex; One Dead

HAMMOND, La. — Five people were injured, and one person was killed, after gunfire erupted Thursday morning at the Willow Villa apartments on Old Baton Rouge Highway.

According to Tangipahoa Parish deputies, the shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. Authorities say Marquanvius Jones opened fire into a crowd, and 26-year-old Javan Myers returned fire. Myers died from his injuries, while Jones and three others — including a 4-year-old boy — were also struck and hospitalized.

One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, described the chaotic scene. “I was in the garage, and then I heard gunshots and ran back inside,” she said. Another resident added, “I looked out the window and saw a body lying down. I was scared.”

Sheriff Gerald Sticker said the altercation appears to have begun over a request for a ride. “There is no excuse for any disagreement to turn into gun violence, and this is no way for any argument to end,” Sticker said.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
