Gayle Nelsen, 89, and Joan Wisneski, 88, Killed in Hermantown House Explosion

HERMANTOWN, Minn. — The Hermantown community is mourning the loss of Gayle Nelsen, 89, and Joan Wisneski, 88, who were tragically killed in a house explosion at the Green Acres Townhomes Saturday evening, January 31, 2026.

Authorities said the explosion occurred around 6:21 p.m. in the north-central part of Hermantown near Lavaque Road, causing catastrophic damage to a building containing six housing units. The blast blew off the roof and shattered windows in nearby structures. Both women were residents of Hermantown and were located by emergency crews—one at 10 p.m. Saturday and the other around 4:30 a.m. Sunday—but were pronounced deceased at the scene.

In addition to the fatalities, eight residents have been displaced, with the Red Cross and the St. Louis County Public Health Department assisting with temporary housing and support. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion with the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office leading the inquiry.

The Hermantown community is coming together to support families and neighbors impacted by this tragedy. Gayle Nelsen and Joan Wisneski will be remembered for their contributions to their community and the lives they touched.
