In Loving Memory: Community Mourns the Loss of 16-Year-Old Berlyn Berghuis After Tragic Crash

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Northfield community is grieving the tragic loss of Berlyn Berghuis, 16, of Northfield, who passed away following a fatal crash on January 19 in Greenvale Township.

The fatal collision occurred around 3:23 p.m. on January 19 at the intersection of 320th Street and Foliage Avenue, involving a semi tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle. According to authorities, Berlyn was driving a 2012 Lexus CT when the vehicle was struck. Deputies arrived to find both occupants unresponsive and immediately began life-saving efforts. Despite those efforts, Berlyn was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The passenger, Anabelle Martinez, 16, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, where she continues to receive treatment. The driver of the semi was not injured.

Berlyn’s sudden passing has left family, friends, classmates, and the Northfield community grieving an unimaginable loss. At just 16 years old, a young life full of promise was taken far too soon.
