SLATON, Texas — The Slaton community is mourning the tragic loss of Araceli Valdez, 23, who was fatally shot Sunday night in a devastating incident on the 300 block of E. Floyd Street.
According to Slaton Police, the suspect, 27-year-old George Cantu, entered the home armed with a gun. During the shooting, he fatally shot Araceli Valdez and her cousin, 18-year-old Marisol Ramirez, before taking his own life. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was involved.
The shooting also left Cantu’s ex-wife, 24-year-old Jasmine Rivas, and 20-year-old Isaiah Chapa seriously injured. Both were transported to UMC, where police say they face a long road to recovery.
Neighbors and family remember Araceli Valdez as a bright, caring, and loved member of the community. Her sudden death has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew her, and her family, friends, and neighbors are struggling to process this heartbreaking loss.
