RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. —The Forest City and Rutherford County community is mourning the tragic loss of Brandon Atkins, 55, who died in a highway accident on January 31, 2026, during winter storm conditions.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Atkins was driving a Chevrolet pickup eastbound on U.S. 74 when he collided with a motor grader performing snow removal. The grader was operated by a company contracted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The impact caused Atkins to be pinned inside his vehicle, and despite the tireless efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
