In Loving Memory of Bronson Paul

TOBIQUE FIRST NATION, N.B. — The Tobique First Nation community is mourning the tragic loss of Bronson Paul, whose life was cut short following a fatal police shooting on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

According to reports, Bronson Paul was shot and killed by RCMP officers on Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) territory. Despite being a member of the community known for his connections and presence among family and friends, Bronson was killed during a police interaction, leaving loved ones and the community in profound grief.

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the family and the community. “Every First Nations life matters, and when a life is lost during a police interaction, communities deserve answers, transparency, and accountability,” she said. The AFN supports calls from Tobique First Nation for a full, impartial, and transparent investigation by the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).

The AFN also highlighted concerns that Tobique First Nation’s council, outreach team, and tribal security—who are experienced in handling and de-escalating tense situations—were not engaged prior to the shooting. The National Chief emphasized that “there are too many instances where First Nations peoples in Canada have lost their lives in police interactions,” reaffirming the urgent need for systemic change.

In response to the tragedy, Chief Ross Perley has called for the closure of the RCMP detachment on Tobique First Nation territory, underscoring the community’s demand for accountability and safety.
