The Iowa Lakes Community College community is mourning the tragic loss of Carter “Tater” Johnson, a freshman baseball player from Rapid City, South Dakota, who passed away following a devastating bus crash in Calhoun County.
The accident occurred just after 11 a.m. Wednesday when the team’s charter bus rolled into a ditch. Due to the number of individuals involved and the severity of injuries, the incident was declared a Mass Casualty Incident. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, Carter later succumbed to his injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
Carter was more than a student-athlete — he was a beloved teammate, a dedicated competitor, and a young man with a bright future ahead of him. Known affectionately as “Tater,” he brought energy, heart, and determination to the field and formed strong bonds with those around him. His passion for baseball and his positive spirit left a lasting impression on teammates, coaches, and classmates.
His sudden passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, and the Iowa Lakes community. As they navigate this painful time, they are surrounded by support, prayers, and heartfelt condolences from across the region.
