With profound sorrow, the community mourns the loss of Chris Bemis, 63, of St. Marys, Ohio, who tragically passed away on January 16, 2026, following a multi-vehicle crash on State Route 49 in Darke County.
On that morning, Chris was operating a 2023 Chevrolet medical transport bus carrying one juvenile passenger and an aid, Bonnie Behee, 62, of New Madison, Ohio, when a northbound full-size cargo van pulling a trailer crossed the centerline and struck his bus. After the collision, the cargo van continued north and struck a 2013 Dodge sedan. Chris was trapped in his bus and required mechanical extrication by fire and rescue personnel. He was transported by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The juvenile passenger and Behee were treated and transported to Wayne Healthcare with non-life-threatening injuries, while the Dodge driver escaped her vehicle unharmed.
Chris Bemis will be remembered for his dedication, compassion, and the warmth he shared with family, friends, and neighbors. His sudden and tragic passing has left a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him.
