CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Clearwater community is mourning the tragic loss of Elias Guillermo Lara Vargas, a teenager who died following a kayaking accident near Honeymoon Island.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Lara Vargas went missing on January 18 after waves capsized his kayak along with 19-year-old Savannah Ozer, who was rescued and taken to a hospital for evaluation. Despite extensive search efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard and local first responders, Lara Vargas’ whereabouts remained unknown for over a week.
On Tuesday morning, a civilian discovered Lara Vargas’ body on Clearwater Beach at approximately 7:40 a.m. The sheriff’s office confirmed that his family has been notified. Authorities have indicated that the incident does not appear suspicious in nature.
