In Loving Memory of Howard Bennett, Camden Firefighter

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Camden community is mourning the loss of Howard Bennett, a 26-year veteran of the Camden Fire Department, who tragically died in the line of duty Thursday morning.

Authorities reported that Bennett was performing routine maintenance on one of the department’s fire boats at Wiggins Marina around 11 a.m. when he fell into icy waters. Despite rapid rescue efforts involving firefighters from Camden and neighboring departments, including Philadelphia, Bennett could not be saved.

“Today, the city of Camden and the entire state of New Jersey lost a hero,” said Mathew Caliente, president of the firefighter association. Camden Fire Chief Jesse Flax confirmed that the department is grieving deeply, describing Bennett as a dedicated and valued member of the firefighting family.

Bennett’s decades of service reflected his unwavering commitment to protecting the community. Family, friends, and colleagues remember him not only as a skilled firefighter but as a compassionate and dependable friend who embodied the spirit of public service.

The city and Camden Fire Department have expressed condolences to Bennett’s family and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time.
