According to the Artesia Police Department, Ortiz was found suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers immediately attempted to provide aid upon arriving at the scene, and emergency medical personnel continued life-saving efforts. Tragically, Ortiz was pronounced dead at approximately 8:10 p.m. on January 20, 2026.

The Criminal Investigation Division of the Artesia Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
