RIVERDALE, Ga. — The Riverdale community is mourning the tragic loss of Jamal Alvin Payne, 44, who was killed Tuesday evening in a shooting now confirmed as a homicide.
The deadly incident unfolded at Emerald Pointe Apartments on Roberts Drive, where police were called to the scene shortly before 8:02 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Payne inside a truck, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. His body remained on scene as investigators worked to process evidence and secure the area.
Investigators observed at least one bullet hole in the passenger-side window of the truck, indicating Payne was shot while inside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to authorities, the suspect or suspects fled before police arrived. Law enforcement believes two individuals may be involved, described as possibly between 17 and 20 years old. One suspect was last seen wearing a white hoodie, while the other was described as wearing a polka-dot jacket.
The Riverdale Police Department is leading the homicide investigation with assistance from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the Clayton County Police Department. A K-9 unit was deployed to search the area, and a helicopter hovered overhead as officers conducted an extensive search for the suspects.
As the investigation continues, family, friends, and neighbors are left grieving a sudden and violent loss. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released information regarding a possible motive.
