COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The Council Bluffs community is mourning the tragic loss of Mark Douglas Hayden, 56, who died Friday afternoon after a devastating semi-truck crash in Pottawattamie County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the fatal crash occurred around 12:05 p.m. on Interstate 80 westbound near Underwood. Hayden was driving a 2004 Peterbilt semi-truck in the right lane when strong wind gusts caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Authorities said that while attempting to regain control, the semi tipped onto the driver’s side and struck a cable barrier in the median.
Despite emergency response efforts, Mark Douglas Hayden was pronounced dead at the scene. Responders from Underwood Rescue and the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office assisted Iowa State Patrol troopers during the investigation and scene management.
