PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. — The Peoria County community is mourning the loss of Michael J. Brodbeck, 62, who died Tuesday after a tragic house fire in the Chillicothe area.
Emergency crews were called at 3:57 p.m. to a home in the 16000 block of North Old Galena Road after reports of a fire. When deputies arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the house. Family members were able to escape safely, but Michael Brodbeck remained inside.
Brodbeck was later found and transported to the hospital unresponsive, not breathing, and without a pulse. Despite emergency efforts by medical staff, he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 5:26 p.m., according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.
An autopsy determined Brodbeck died from severe smoke inhalation as a result of the fire. The circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
