LAREDO, Texas – The community is mourning the loss of 71-year-old Ricardo Garza Iruegas of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, who tragically passed away Wednesday evening in a fatal head-on crash east of Laredo.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred just before 5:00 p.m. on January 14, 2026, near mile marker 812 on State Highway 59, about 12 miles east of the city. A preliminary investigation indicates that a westbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2014 Nissan Sentra, which Ricardo was driving. Authorities say he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, which continues as DPS troopers work to determine the exact circumstances of this tragic incident.
