MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — The Muskegon County community is mourning the tragic loss of Rylen Yager, a 14-year-old eighth-grade student at Fruitport Middle School, who was killed in a shooting Saturday evening.
According to Fruitport Township police, officers responded to a report of a shooting around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, in the 2900 block of Romedius Street, just south of East Broadway Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Rylen dead at the scene.
Because of a connection between the victim’s family and Fruitport Township, Michigan State Police were asked to take over the investigation. Authorities have released limited details, stating only that the case remains active and ongoing.
Fruitport Community Schools confirmed Rylen’s identity and shared a tribute through Superintendent Jason Kennedy, who described him as a student whose presence brought light and joy to many.
“Known for a huge smile and a wonderful sense of humor, Rylen had a way of making others feel welcome and valued,” Kennedy wrote. “With many friends and a heart of gold, Rylen was kind, compassionate, and always willing to connect with those around him. Artistic and creative, while also athletic, he carried a positive energy and a genuine love for life.”
Rylen’s death has left family, friends, classmates, and teachers in deep mourning. The district’s Emotional Support Team met Sunday night to prepare support services, and counselors and social workers will be available for students and staff.
As the investigation continues, Muskegon County stands united in grief, honoring the memory of a young life taken far too soon.
