CALDWELL, N.J. — The Caldwell community is mourning the tragic loss of Sharon Thomas, 56, who passed away Friday evening after being struck by two vehicles in a hit-and-run incident on Bloomfield Avenue.
According to Essex County authorities, Thomas had just stepped off a New Jersey Transit bus around 6:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Bloomfield Avenue. As she crossed the street, she was struck by a vehicle. Witnesses said the driver briefly stopped, exited the car, and looked at Thomas lying injured in the roadway, then returned to the vehicle and fled the scene, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II reported.
While Thomas remained in the roadway, she was hit a second time by another vehicle. That driver immediately stopped and remained at the scene, cooperating fully with authorities.
Police officers arriving at the scene found Thomas unconscious in the street. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m.
Her sudden and tragic death has left family, friends, and the Caldwell community in deep mourning. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and are seeking information about the driver who fled.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-877-847-7432. The community remembers Sharon Thomas and holds her loved ones in their thoughts during this difficult time.
