Laurinburg Mourns John Keven Hopkins After Fatal Shooting in Gibson

LAURINBURG, N.C. — The Laurinburg community is grieving the tragic loss of John Keven Hopkins, who was found deceased Sunday morning, February 1, 2026, in Gibson.

According to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 10:00 a.m. after a landowner reported a vehicle parked on the backside of his property near the South Carolina state line, off Railroad Street. Upon arrival, authorities located Hopkins unresponsive inside the vehicle. Investigators confirmed he had suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is being investigated as a homicide, with assistance from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details have been released.

John Keven Hopkins’ passing has left family, friends, and neighbors in Laurinburg mourning a life taken far too soon. He is remembered with love and sorrow by those who knew him, as the community comes together to support his loved ones during this difficult time.
