WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — An 89-year-old woman reported missing from west Toledo was found dead Thursday morning in a crashed vehicle in Wood County.
The crash was reported shortly before 8 a.m. near East Broadway and Genoa Road. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers responded and discovered a maroon-colored vehicle in a ditch. Emergency crews confirmed that an elderly female occupant was deceased at the scene. The victim was later identified by the Ohio State Highway Patrol as Carole Kleber. Toledo police had reported Kleber missing on Wednesday, and authorities confirmed she was the same person.
A homeowner near the crash site told authorities the vehicle had not been there when they returned from work around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, suggesting the car may have been in the ditch overnight. Troopers estimated the crash likely occurred between 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday.
Officials said that only one vehicle was involved and that speed or impairment does not appear to have been a factor. Troopers at the scene speculated that Kleber may not have realized the road ended at a “T” intersection and began turning too late, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident.
Carole Kleber’s passing has left family, friends, and the Toledo community grieving her loss.
