Missing Woman Lupita Zuniga Ontiveros Found Deceased in Merced County Canal

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. — The body of Lupita Zuniga Ontiveros has been recovered from the Delta-Mendota Canal near Whitworth and Cottonwood roads in Merced County, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

The recovery location is approximately seven miles from where Lupita went missing on January 28, after she and four others crashed into the canal while riding a RZR off-road vehicle.

Family members confirmed that Lupita’s body was found early this morning by a young man. The family later shared the heartbreaking news during a Facebook Live broadcast, confirming the remains were hers. She was identified by the clothing she was wearing.

Lupita’s mother expressed deep gratitude to everyone who helped search, shared information, and offered prayers and support during the difficult days following her disappearance. She also thanked God for allowing her daughter’s body to be found, saying it came at a moment when the pain felt overwhelming.

The recovery brings a measure of closure to a grieving family and community that had been holding onto hope. Loved ones continue to mourn the loss of Lupita and remember her life as they lean on one another for strength during this painful time.
